HB-NS Frequently Asked Questions

I am not a PHP/MySQL guru, is there an easy install option?
Why is the upgrade from 1.1.0 to 1.1.1 so involved? I had my files set up quite nicely and now I'll have to put in a lot of work again.
Can I disable html?
The script doesn't allow PHP code in the message. Why?
Why do you only support a subset of bbCode and not the usual font tags like color and size?
Does the script support more bbCode than is available in the interface?
I don't need bbCode or stuff like that, now what?
How can I protect the admin page?

I'm having trouble downloading the file, it end up with the name dlcount.php.

I am not a PHP/MySQL guru, is there an easy install option?
There is as of version 1.1.6. See the included readme. One caveat though: configuration.php MUST be configured properly for your system, particularly the database options.

Why is the upgrade from 1.1.0 to 1.1.1 so involved? I had my files set up quite nicely and now I'll have to put in a lot of work again.
This is because there were quite a lot of changes to the script. I fxed some bugs and I also added bbcode. I decided that since both the visitor interface and the administrative module used lots of the same code to move that code to a new file they both use: configuration.php. This change means that for most installations you will only need to customise configuration.php and the header and footer files and not touch index.php or newsadmin.php.

Can I disable html?
Yes, just look in functions.php and look for line 9:
// $text_clean = htmlspecialchars($text_clean);
and remove the commentmarkers ( // ).

The script doesn't allow PHP code in the message. Why?
This is an inbuilt security measure of PHP. If you want to add this modify the script; take a look at eval(). I have absolutely no plans to add this.

Why do you only support a subset of bbCode and not the usual font tags like color and size?
This is because the script outputs XHTML and font tags have been deprecated (that is: must not be used) by the W3C. If you want to add style information to certain text and the provided options (bold, italic, preformatted) are not enough consider writing HTML with inline styles.

Does the script support more bbCode than is available in the interface?
Not at the moment. Adding stuff is relatively easy though, take a look at the function convertBBCode in configuration.php and the file bbcode.js to see how the pop-ups work and add the necessary code to newsadmin.php.

I don't need bbCode or stuff like that, now what?
You can grab an older version. I'd recommend version 1.1.0 as 1.0 and 1.0.1 had a few small interface oddities. See the version history.

How can I protect the admin page?
I recommend using .htaccess to secure administrative pages as it offers a very flexible method. If you cannot use that take a look at the first few lines in admin.php and follow the instructions.

Is this script really free and if so why?
The script is free for commercial, educational and personal use. I like free software and I believe (almost) everyone does. With freedom comes a price though, you may not sell this script to anyone. You may, however, ask for a fee to install or modify it for a client.

Am I allowed to modify the script?
Yes. If you do something really cool with it I would like to see it, send me an e-mail so I can check it out. If you add a really great enhancement I would also like to be notified so I can consider it for the next version.

Is the script covered by some sort of open source license?
No. At the moment I have better things to do than sort out which open source / free software license is most appropriate. The answers to the two questions above will have to cover it for now.

I'm having trouble downloading the file, it end up with the name dlcount.php.
You're probably using Internet Explorer for Macintosh. This is a problem with that browser, that Microsoft seems unwilling to fix. Just drag the downloaded file onto Stuffit Expander and it should expand correctly. Alternatively you might want to look into another browser as Internet Explorer is effectively dead and Microsoft will no longer update it. If you are running Mac OS X I'd recommend Safari.

I cannot do anything with the targzipped file I downloaded, what now?
You can download an alternative fileformat here.

How often has the script been downloaded?
